About the exhibition

Loch Gallery is pleased to present an Exhibition and Sale of works by one of Canada's true artistic treasures, William Kurelek. During his career of little more than twenty-five years he created a prolific number of works reflecting detailed imagery of Canadian life derived from his personal experiences. Both seasoned Kurelek collectors and those new to his work will find this to be an exceptional exhibition.

William Kurelek's career began in earnest with his first solo exhibition that opened at Toronto’s Isaacs Gallery in March 1960 and concluded seventeen years later when he died in 1977. His experience, and the diverse works it generated, was entwined with his faith, life, and view of Canada. The power and enduring appeal of his works are his deft balance of recognizable imagery and open invitation into a narrative. Like Cornelius Krieghoff in the nineteenth-century, Kurelek made images derived from experience that are not simply documentation. Both made art: something more profound than the everyday, and a medium for understanding our humanity.

Loch Gallery would like to thank Greg Humeniuk for the wonderfully written introduction to the Exhibition. We also wish to thank and extend our appreciation to each of our clients who have generously loaned their personal Kurelek works to this Exhibition.
