About Ivan Eyre

This superb two-decade survey of the art of Ivan Eyre at Loch Gallery in Toronto coincides with an opening to celebrate nine monumental bronze sculptures by Eyre which he has given to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinberg. Both are without trying to be, major events in the art world of Canada.

The Loch Gallery show offers an important career overview of Eyre, and the McMichael a significant addition to its “Tom Thomson and Group of Seven” guidelines. Eyre works with equal ease in painting, sculpture, and drawing - proving that he, as an artist, is a “man for all seasons”.

An original, his career offers a model for how to build an art through keeping "meaning on the move", determining it, multiplying it, suggesting it, all the while couching these actions in visually interesting and materially diverse forms.

The 47 works in the show (28 paintings, 15 sculptures, and 4 drawings) date from 1964 to 2011 – an immense body of work for a Gallery show, but one which reveals the total commitment to Eyre on the part of the dealer, Alan Loch, and his father, David. But this isn’t the tempestuous kind of exhibition typical of the blockbuster. It is about one artist regarding himself, calmly and from a distance, as he discovers who he is and how best to reveal his capacities.
