About Philip Craig

Philip Craig was born in Ottawa in 1951. Encouraged to pursue art from an early age, he attended specialized art programs eventually graduating from Sheridan College of Art and Design in 1971.

The next decade was spent living and working in Newfoundland where is isolation from the art world allowed him to focus on traditional subject matter. By 1986, the act of painting became so compelling that Philip returned to his home base in Ottawa with his young family determined to paint full time.

His continual search for new subject matter and the wish to develop his technical abilities pushed Craig to visit England, then France, Italy, Morocco, India and for the last decade, Canada. These travels not only enriched his palette but also provided him with a deeper understanding of light. Over the years, Craig has always been preoccupied with the figure. During the 80s, the commissioned portrait formed a major part of his work. As his personal style evolved, the figure has surfaced in paintings of every day activities - waiters at work, friends chatting at home, solitary figures reading or simply sitting. More recently, for the last few years, Craig has turned his attention to our north producing a deeply personal and richly evocative landscape experience.

Philip Craig's paintings are collected in Canada, the US, England, and around the world.
