Loch Gallery presents “Loon Echo”, a collection of paintings from Philip Craig’s new Otter Lake studio. Craig's journey through the wild Canadian landscape is inspired by iconic images of Ontario that capture the area around Otter Lake, Algonquin Park, Georgian Bay and Killarney in his own characteristic style.
With a flurry of brushstrokes, Craig brings to life “Little Island”, an isolated cluster of towering cedars and pines on a bed of Pre-Cambrian rock. Craig’s expert knowledge of light is brought to the forefront in this latest collection, exemplified in the way sunlight breaks through tree branches creating dazzling effects on lake water. In scenes such as “Otter Lake” and “Beaver Dam” Craig creates the impression that we have joined him in his canoe as he navigates the ragged shoreline, searching for the perfect location for his next painting.
Through his richly expressive brushwork and his impeccable knowledge of light Craig not only captures the physical landscape, his paintings also epitomize the sense of awe and tranquility one feels in the untamed landscape - the emotional connection that bonds us to the land.
Philip Craig will be present in the gallery Saturday, September 9th from 2-4pm. Join us in welcoming the artist at 16 Hazelton Ave.
