MICHAEL FORSTER - November 30th - December 18th, 2013 in Toronto

Forster painted all of the works in this exhibition during the 1980's and 1990's, using pure colour and complex, fluid compositions to express largely subjective subject matter - in fact, the only subject matter he believed gave him complete freedom as a painter, what he called his 'inner landscapes'. Equally, the paintings reflect Forster's passion and deep understanding of astronomy. For years, the artist searched his memory and explored in paint the suns, moons, planets and meteor showers which he experienced as a child in India, as a war artist during the night watch on a battleship cruiser and in his beloved garden sanctuary in Southern England. A master technically, Forster's subtle layering of paint saturates the canvas with myriad  colours and forms that vibrate silently for those who watch.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue available for purchase, with a recent biographical survey by art historian and curator Dennis Reid.
