Les Thomas and Shannon Craig Morphew, September 12 - 19, 2020 in Toronto

Loch Gallery is excited to present a recent selection of paintings by celebrated Alberta artist Les Thomas and Ontario's own Shannon Craig Morphew.

In the front room of the Toronto gallery, we will be featuring a selection of paintings from Les Thomas's recent collection, "The Bow River Paintings". This exhibition explores Thomas's deep appreciation of the Bow River and its shoreline, interpreted through the artist's unique visual language.

A master angler fly fisherman, Thomas's journey to create a body of work based on the Bow River began some 12 years ago. Through his years of fishing the Bow, Thomas has keenly studied the river's surrounding landscape, as well as the wildlife living in the water and at its edge.

Included in this exhibition is a special nine-canvas installation featuring images of the trout species of the Bow River. As described by the artist, "the wet skin and scales of trout plays host to a rich variety of colours and reflections that alter like a hologram with each glance". Thomas has expertly translated this holographic quality onto the canvas in this kaleidoscopic group of images.

In the second room of our Toronto gallery, we will be featuring a selection of new paintings from Ottawa based artist Shannon Craig Morphew.

In this recent collection, the artist takes the viewer on a journey across the country. Through Morphew's dynamic use of line she captures the energy of the Canadian landscape. We start in the east with a sweeping panorama of the Newfoundland coast. Morphew then guides us through Northern Ontario with its granite rock formations and windswept pines, before reaching the wide open, vast skies of the Canadian Prairies, and ending up finally in the majestic ranges of the Rockies.

Influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, Morphew's style of active brushwork and minimal colour expresses a very modern, personal creative vision.
