Exploring the Canadian Rockies with Walter J. Phillips

Loch Gallery is pleased to share a series of Walter J. Phillips's scenes of the Rocky Mountains.

Walter J. Phillips (1884 – 1963) first encountered the Canadian Rockies in 1926 and over the next 15 years would return numerous times to capture their grandeur.

In 1940 Phillips joined the facultury of the Banff Sumer School of Fine Arts where he would teach for nearly 20 years. He and his family finally moved to Banff in 1943 where they would live beneath the shadow of Mount Rundle—his "bread and butter" mountain—until 1960.

To explore more of Walter Phillips's Rocky Mountain imagery, purchase a copy of Lisa Christensen's Truth and Beauty in the Canadian Rockies: An Explorer's Guide to the Art of Walter J. Phillips.
