Barry McCarthy "Architecture and Landscape", April 6 - 13, in Toronto

Loch Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of "Architecture and Landscape", an exhibition of exceptional new oils & watercolours by renowned Canadian artist Barry McCarthy. This show will feature paintings from McCarthy’s travels across the country, capturing the local architecture and windswept coastlines of PEI and Nova Scotia, the rolling pastoral fields of Southern Ontario, and the rugged wilderness of the Canadian Rockies.

"This part of the world is a jewel in the rough, with paintings offerings themselves over every hill," says McCarthy of the power and majesty of our Canadian East Coast. Fields of purple lupines, weather-beaten houses, and expansive beaches are all subjects of his latest Atlantic-inspired paintings.

McCarthy creates atmospheric, luminous images of Ontario through his balanced palette, thoughtful compositions, and technical brushwork. In his nocturne “Mystic Moon”, McCarthy reveals his deep understanding of how light falls on dark subjects. Edges are obscured in the reflected light of the pale moon, and in this light the painting glows from within.

The two major west coast canvases in this exhibition, "Lunch Break View, BC" and "Glacial Runoff", are inspired by the artist's motorcycle journey through the winding mountain roads of British Columbia. McCarthy creates drama in the triangular patterns of the mountains and the slivers of light always slicing up the terrain. His unique techniques produce images that evoke a quiet awe, allowing the viewer to feel immersed in the grandeur of the landscape.
