Alexander Johnson Musgrove was a Scottish-born Canadian artist, known for his significant contributions to the Canadian art scene, particularly in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1881, Musgrove pursued his artistic education at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art. His early training in Scotland laid a strong foundation for his future career as an artist and educator.

In 1913, Musgrove emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he took on the role of Principal at the Winnipeg School of Art. Shortly after his arrival, he remarked on the potential for a distinct Canadian school of painting, inspired by the country's natural landscapes, including its clear skies, vast plains, and majestic mountains.

Musgrove's tenure at the Winnipeg School of Art lasted until 1921, when he left to establish the Western Art Academy. In 1914, he founded the Winnipeg Sketch Club, and in 1925, he played a pivotal role in revitalizing the Manitoba Society of Artists, becoming a regular exhibitor at its shows. His expertise in watercolours was well-regarded, and he frequently wrote on art for local newspapers, sharing his insights and passion for the subject.

In the 1930s, Musgrove and fellow artist Walter J. Phillips sketched together in rural Manitoba, capturing the province's scenic beauty. This collaboration reflects the interconnectedness of the Winnipeg art community during that period.

After 1932, Musgrove served for many years as curator of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, further cementing his influence in the local art community. He continued to be a key figure in the development and promotion of the arts in Manitoba.

Alexander Johnson Musgrove passed away in Winnipeg in 1952. His legacy endured, and in 1986, a retrospective of his work was held, celebrating his contributions to Canadian art and his lasting impact on the artistic community in Winnipeg.
