Alex Janvier (February 28, 1935 – July 10, 2024) was a Canadian First Nations painter celebrated for his vibrant, abstract works that blend modernist influences with deep Indigenous cultural traditions. Of Dene Suline and Saulteaux heritage, Janvier was a founding member of the Indigenous Seven and is recognized as a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada.

Born on the Le Goff Reserve, Cold Lake First Nations in northern Alberta, Janvier’s artistic talent emerged early and was nurtured during his time at the Blue Quills Indian Residential School. He went on to receive formal training at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary (now the Alberta University of the Arts), graduating with honours in 1960.  Alex was one of the first professionally trained First Nations artists in Canada.

Over his six-decade career, Janvier’s work was exhibited nationally and internationally, from the First Nations of Canada Pavilion at Expo 67 to a major retrospective at the National Gallery of Canada in 2016. His monumental mosaic, Tsą tsą ke kʼe (Iron Foot Place), installed at Rogers Place in Edmonton, remains a powerful public tribute to his vision.

Janvier operated the Janvier Gallery in Cold Lake with his family, making his work accessible to collectors worldwide. Today, Alex Janvier paintings for sale are highly sought-after for their distinctive fusion of Indigenous storytelling, bold abstraction, and rich colour palettes. His art continues to be a cornerstone of Canadian art history and a meaningful addition to private and public collections.
