Krieghoff Art Snapped up in London - Nov 3, 1988

LONDON (CP) - Four paintings by Canadian artist Cornelius Krieghoff were auctioned off yesterday, with one selling for more than $275,000 to a Winnipeg art dealer.

In just seconds, the price for The Blizzard, an oil on canvas that Krieghoff painted in 1858, rose from an estimated $130,000 Cdn. to $284,592. It went to David Loch of Winnipeg-based Loch Gallery.

Loch was also the top bidder for another winter scene by Krieghoff, Three Habitants Driving A Sleigh In Winter, which sold for $166,000.

The two paintings were part of a group of five owned by a British family for more than 100 years. One was withdrawn from the auction.

Another unidentified Canadian businessman paid $143,000 for Crossing The Frozen St. Lawrence, painted in 1860. The same businessman was outbid on two other Krieghoff works.

A London dealer got a smaller Krieghoff oil titled Indian Hunter for more than $66,000.
