Winnipeggers back city's feverish efforts to buy rare oil painting of Winnie-the-Pooh

The city of Winnipeg, known more for its blustering winds than its association with a perpetually flustered bear, is in a bother over the idea of owning a rare oil painting of Winnie-the-Pooh.

Children are breaking open their piggy banks, seniors are dropping off $20 bills and well-heeled Winnipeggers are brandishing their chequebooks so the city can buy the large oval-shaped painting of A. A. Milne's famous bear, honey pot in paw, at Sotheby's auction house in London next week. A poll conducted by a local radio station hasn't turned up one person who is against the idea, said Mayor Glen Murray.

This is one Early Snow that Winnipeggers should really want to see.

Rather than just another unwelcome meteorological mishap, the Early Snow in question on this late-spring day is the latest acquisition of the Winnipeg Art Gallery - a 1916 canvas by Group of Seven artist Tom Thomson that now ranks as the most expensive Canadian historical painting ever purchased.

$18,000 painting sold as junk for $3 at garage sale

NEXT TIME you have a garage sale, remember the poor soul from Portage la Prairie who was just trying to make a few bucks on a junky old painting. According to Winnipeg art dealer David Loch that junky old painting is the work of the late great Manitoba artist William Kurelek (1927-1977). Today it hangs in Winnipeg's Loch Gallery. Retail price: $18,000. Garage sale price: "Three dollars or so."
