Biography

George Franklin Arbuckle was born in Toronto in 1909. He studied at the Ontario College of Art under J.E.H. MacDonald, F.S. Challener, and J.W. Beatty, later teaching there himself and winning several awards for his work. Arbuckle also taught at the Northern Vocational School in Toronto from 1932-1938 and at the Franz Johnston Summer School in Georgian Bay from 1932-1940. He was married to the artist, Frances-Anne Johnston, who was also the daughter of Franz Johnston, once a member of the Group of Seven.
Arbuckle’s work is a reflection of his travels to such places as the Northwest Territories, the MacKenzie River, and the Yukon. The artist is recognized for his knowledge of historical subjects and his execution of landscape, cityscape, and figurative subjects which call on both Realism and Impressionism.
Arbuckle executed major murals and tapestries for the Hamilton City Hall, the Royal Bank of Canada in Toronto, and the Chateau Champlain in Montreal. Between 1960 and 1964, he served as the president of the Royal Canadian Academy.
