Biography

Isabel Kann was born in 1921, in Bangalore, India.

Her education in art was comprehensive and was funded by major Scholarship grants throughout her years of study. She studied at Bournemouth Art School in England from 1938 to 1942 and the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland under
Sr. Wm. Gillies, RA from 1942 to 47 with a three year absence during the war. Upon completion of her degree, Isabel was awarded a one year Post Graduate Scholarship at the College.

The artist came to Canada during the 50's with her family and while raising her children she completed her BA at the University of Toronto in 1974. Shortly there after she began to exhibit her work regularly and has done so for the past
30 years.

Kann has remained consistent in her subject matter and her approach to reality. A still life painter of interiors, she creates a world of familiarity and calm. A simple table, vase of flowers, open window, oriental rug, all carefully constructed in natural light belie the sophistication and complexity of her compositions.

About her life and work, Isabel says, “Because I am a dreamer and often unaware of my surroundings, I find the shock of the real when I concentrate on it to be infinitely subtle and exciting. Painting is my natural way of expression.”

Isabel Kann is represented in both public and private collections in Canada and the US.
