Biography
Carol Stewart was born in 1959 in Sarnia, Ontario. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Art at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in 1981. Upon graduation, the artist began to paint full time and has since exhibited in Toronto every other year. Carol is currently completing her MFA at Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri.The artist has from the very beginning found her inspiration in gardens from London to Vancouver to St. Louis. Descibed as a maximalist, her dense richly detailed paintings form a tapestry of patterns, texture and colour.
“I always paint from life. My work is about my sense of place. The changes in light and colour over time and the spirit of where I am are not things I can find in photographs. For me there is more of interest in the physical world than I can invent. The sudden play of light on a surface and the interaction of colours and patterns are what interest me. These are absorbed over time and then expressed in my paintings.” These life paintings express the artist's fascination with the world around her.
Carol's paintings are included in numerous corporate and private collections in Canada and the US.
