Henri Le Sidaner
The French Symbolist artist, Henri Le Sidaner, is known for his romanticized garden, land- and streetscape paintings. Unlike his Symbolist contemporaries, Le Sidaner eschewed allegorical figures in favour of evoking a dreamlike sense of reality often devoid of human figures. Instead, shadows and suggestions of their presence remain in the empty chairs, picnic scenes and intimate tables set for dinner. The artist's preferred time of day - twilight - heightens the sense that the painting's surface hints at secrets within. These quiet scenes belie a strange psychological atmosphere characteristic of Le Sidaner's oeuvre.
